There are many different types of phone cards. Non-refillable phone cards cannot be recharged after the card runs out of time. They generally expires so always be sure to checkout the expiration date before you use it. If you don't use phone cards very often it is also a good idea to make sure that it has a long expiration date.

Reffilable phone cards can be recharged at anytime. Usually the can be refilled using a phone or even on your computer. Computer accounts are convenient because they allow you to check your balance online so you don't run out of minutes.

There are some charges associated with phone cards that you should be aware of. Here are the most common ones.

Connection fees: These apply every time a phone call connects. They tend to vary depending on the number you are dialing.

Service charges: A service charge is usually deducted ever time a call is made.

Taxes: Taxes make up a percentage of each call, usually from 5%-25%.

Maintenance Fee: Maintenance fees are deducted as long as there is money on your card. They can be deducted from every month to every week.

Rounding: Each call that is made is rounded. The number that is rounded to varies from 1 second to 3 minutes.

Pay-Phone Surcharge: Most phonecards deduct a fee if a pay-phone is used. This fee is usually about 99¢.
